Description
Panax japonica var. major is a species of the genus Panax (Araliaceae), and the swollen rhizome is the main medicinal part. As a folk medicine in China, it has been mainly used for nourishing yin and cough expectorant and exhibits hemostatic, analgesic and sedative activities (Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission 2015). The oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins are the main chemical constituents in Panax japonica var. major, such as ginsenoside Ro, chikusetsusaponin IVa, chikusetsusaponin IV.
