Description

Dillenia indica (Dilleniaceae) commonly known as elephant apple, is a widely distributed species of Dillenia in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, China (Yunnan), Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Traditionally, this plant has been used for the treatment of diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, constipation, hair loss and to enhance the immunity of the body. Extracts from different parts of D. indica showed diverse biological activities, including antidiabetic, anticholinesterase, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, cytotoxic and wound healing activity. The chemical constituents isolated from D. indica include flavonoids, triterpene, steroids, phenols, tannins and polysaccharides.
